I feel a bit out of the loop here. Apparently, third party comment systems are all the rage.

I'm interested in hear about your experiences with them. This is something I'd like to add to The Linux Alternative Project. Are there any open source friendly solutions?

New Layout and logo! (no replies)

I'm looking for help and with layout and a logo.

The logo, well, I'm open to suggestions. I really don't have anything in mind, but I would like to start giving people banners that they can link to.

I'd really like to separate the mark up and design, even more. Maybe going to two columns instead of two? I'm open to suggestions.

Of course, I'll give you full credit for your work. Please help me out!

Hello,

I'm Deacon Michael and I'm in Baltimore MD. I am still using the XP version of the world's most popular Trojan Horse, namely Window$. But I am increasingly frustrated with it. I've been trying to learn Linux for several years, but I do not have a systematic method of doing this. I can't take courses at the local community college because they keep saying that I am no qualified for the courses since I do not have academic credits for the courses which I could actually teach. A later review of my transcripts from other colleges reveal that I have earned a B in one of the courses for which I am "not qualified" to take.

I have two computers which have Ubuntu on them. One of them was running for over a year, but the only thing that I really did on it was to check one of my e-mail addresses. Most of my computer time is spent in WordPerfect X3 and WordPerfect X4 and so far I have not found anything that is as powerful and does what I need to do. I also spent a considerable amount of time with Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2.

I also use Panaroma to rotate the wallpapers on my Window$ desktop in a random fashion. And I use Dreamweaver and Image Maker to create my web pages.

I am open to suggestions to make my life easier.

Thank you.

Preparing data for collaboration (7 replies)

One of my New Year's resolutions is to open The Linux Alternative Project to collaboration.

I'm pretty much set against a wiki. In my opinion, wiki's are bloated, spam magnets and not shared hosting friendly.

I'm looking at my options. Right now I'm thinking of using the same model that perl101.org is using. Organize the data, use some sort of a HTML/CSS compiler to create the static site, and use version control for collaboration.

For some more reference, here is perl101.org's code:
[github.com]

We gain:
- Collaboration
- Version control (it's good, in general)

Possibly annoyances .
- No instant gratification. There still a review process, and publishing.
- I'm leaning toward using git. git isn't newbie friendly. But it has the features I like.
- sending in patches isn't newbie friendly either.

To move toward this or any other system, I have to start organizing the data into a friendly format. I'm leaning towards YAML right now. There are YAML parsers for most languages and the syntax is easy to read and edit.

The HTML/CSS compiler I'm looking at is markdown(http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/). A good way to keep the style and data separate.

Please feel free to reply with ideas you might have, positives and negatives or anything else you want to chime in with.

Thanks!

I'm looking for somebody to help out with the CSS design on the site. The markup should be done so all I got to do is drop a new CSS file in place and it should work. I'm looking for pretty much of the same design I have now, however, I think I can be talked into a two column type of design too.
