Hello,

I'm Deacon Michael and I'm in Baltimore MD. I am still using the XP version of the world's most popular Trojan Horse, namely Window$. But I am increasingly frustrated with it. I've been trying to learn Linux for several years, but I do not have a systematic method of doing this. I can't take courses at the local community college because they keep saying that I am no qualified for the courses since I do not have academic credits for the courses which I could actually teach. A later review of my transcripts from other colleges reveal that I have earned a B in one of the courses for which I am "not qualified" to take.

I have two computers which have Ubuntu on them. One of them was running for over a year, but the only thing that I really did on it was to check one of my e-mail addresses. Most of my computer time is spent in WordPerfect X3 and WordPerfect X4 and so far I have not found anything that is as powerful and does what I need to do. I also spent a considerable amount of time with Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2.

I also use Panaroma to rotate the wallpapers on my Window$ desktop in a random fashion. And I use Dreamweaver and Image Maker to create my web pages.

I am open to suggestions to make my life easier.

Thank you.

Preparing data for collaboration (7 replies)

One of my New Year's resolutions is to open The Linux Alternative Project to collaboration.

I'm pretty much set against a wiki. In my opinion, wiki's are bloated, spam magnets and not shared hosting friendly.

I'm looking at my options. Right now I'm thinking of using the same model that perl101.org is using. Organize the data, use some sort of a HTML/CSS compiler to create the static site, and use version control for collaboration.

For some more reference, here is perl101.org's code:
[github.com]

We gain:
- Collaboration
- Version control (it's good, in general)

Possibly annoyances .
- No instant gratification. There still a review process, and publishing.
- I'm leaning toward using git. git isn't newbie friendly. But it has the features I like.
- sending in patches isn't newbie friendly either.

To move toward this or any other system, I have to start organizing the data into a friendly format. I'm leaning towards YAML right now. There are YAML parsers for most languages and the syntax is easy to read and edit.

The HTML/CSS compiler I'm looking at is markdown(http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/). A good way to keep the style and data separate.

Please feel free to reply with ideas you might have, positives and negatives or anything else you want to chime in with.

Thanks!

Moving from Windows and looking for replacement for "File Hamster" (filehamster.com)

Basically I'm a PHP developer and it would watch my apache web documents folder for changes and make a backup with a time-stamp of any changed files. Once you had those backups you could restore from an old version, compare two versions with a diff app like Beyond Compare, and you could get a report of changes for a certain time period. That last part is useful for verifying time spent on projects.

Hi Linux Alternatives!

I've been a Linux user since '96 and my main area of interest is multimedia production. I've seen your page linked a few times now and there are a few big omissions right now. I couldn't see a way to edit the main page so I'll just list them here:

DeVeDe - DeVeDe makes it simple to author DVD videos (or (S)VCD) including menus converting from any type of video supported by mplayer. Also available for Windows.

winff - A great ffmpeg GUI with many useful presets, winff makes batch conversion of videos simple under Linux. Windows version too.

dvd95 - dvd95 is a simple GTK app for shrinking dual-layer video DVDs onto single layer discs.

handbrake - handbrake is a cross-platform alternative to dvd::rip- it rips DVDs to MPEG4

qcad - qcad is a GPL 2D CAD program with a QT4 interface that is available for Linux, Windows and Mac

soundconverter - soundconverter is a simple GTK app to easily convert sound files into MP3, OGG, WAV or FLAC

nautilus-image-converter - This is a plugin for the GNOME file manager that allows you to quickly and easily resize a large number of images just by selecting and right-clicking on them under Nautilus.

rebuild_db - This is a platform independent python script that allows iPod shuffle users to ditch itunes entirely and use their ipod like a normal USB memory stick by copying the songs over then running the script on any computer that has python installed to update the ipods song database.

Musescore - Musescore is a FOSS cross-platform musical score editor ala Finale or Sibelius

milkytracker - milkytracker is the premier open source, cross platform music tracking program for creating and editing Amiga MOD and similar files

sooperlooper - Is a great fun multitrack sampler

I'm sure there's more cool apps that should be on that list that I haven't remembered just yet...

I just found this JabRef witch is an alternative to EndNote.

It's a great freeware (I don't know if it's opensource though) available with Linux, OSX and Windows and is a frontend of BibTex.

I don't know much about it, but it should be added to the web page "Linux Alternative Project" (http://www.linuxalt.com/)

Excellent site, however the desing seems to a bit lacking, but it is updated fairly often, and the additon of the forums is great. There is another website out there that is on a similar goal called Open Source Alternatives Link, it doesn't seem to be updated on a regular basis, no community discussion either. With a merge of sites, you would have one great site.

I'm looking for somebody to help out with the CSS design on the site. The markup should be done so all I got to do is drop a new CSS file in place and it should work. I'm looking for pretty much of the same design I have now, however, I think I can be talked into a two column type of design too.

First of all hello!

I'm looking for something similar to Autoruns from Sysinternals. I can find out what boots with Linux, but i haven't found a nice GUI program that shows the info like Autoruns for Windows.

Cheers
